Vietnam Asia's Hidden Gem

Vietnam's allure is easy to appreciate where ancient, labyrinthine trading quarters of still-thriving craft industries are juxtaposed with grand colonial mansions from the French era and 21st-century glass and steel high-rises. Apart from its fascinating history, vibrant culture, delectable cuisine and mild climate, it is also one of the best up-and-coming golfing destinations, thanks to the plethora of fantastic golf courses that are earning rave reviews from around the world. Not surprisingly, Vietnam was voted as the "Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year" in 2012 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

Like Thailand, diversity remains a key draw for Vietnam. The north is home to the surreal Halong Bay, the paddy fields of Sapa and the capital Hanoi with its thousand-year-old streets, kerbside draught beer joints and art galleries while the excitement of the south is led by bustle of Ho Chi Minh City (erstwhile Saigon) and the riverine lifestyles in the Mekong Delta. Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have a vast range of golf courses lying on their outskirts in the midst of overwhelming natural beauty.

Golf in Vietnam really comes into its own on the central region of Danang at the crossroads of a magnificent coastline and routes to cultural landmarks in Hue and Hoi An. Here designers of the caliber of Faldo, Norman, Donald, and Montgomerie have been gifted seaside terrains to craft a cluster of golf courses that are rated amongst the best in Asia.

Vietnam weather is characterized by strong monsoon seasons, mixed with a healthy dose of sun, rain, and humidity. The north is best visited between October to December and from March to April, whereas Ho Chi Minh City and the south are best enjoyed during December to May. For Danang, December to May is the best time to avoid rains.

Danang, Hoi An, and Hue together make up “Vietnam’s Golf Coast”. In 1965 Danang was the location of the first landing of US forces in Vietnam when it was aptly coined “China Beach”. The same area is now home to one of Asia’s best beaches, many world-class resorts and Vietnam’s best golf courses. Stroll along the Han riverfront and you'll find gleaming new modernist hotels, and apartments and restaurants are emerging. Close by, Hoi An, with its lovely wooden shop-homes was set up in the 16th century. For those looking a glimpse of the real Vietnam in the protected old town, or just a fun night out, Hoi An is perfect. Hue is another ancient capital that has undergone centuries of development.
